Background
The National Acoustic Laboratory is conducting the Longitudinal Outcomes of Children with Hearing Impairment (LOCHI) study. This study will examine the long-term speech, language, psychosocial and educational outcomes of children with hearing impairment. Children who wear hearing aids and/or cochlear implants are included.
More information about the study can be found at: http://www.outcomes.nal.gov.au
Detail
This project is part of the LOCHI study to find relationships between multiple potential ‘predictor variables’ and multiple outcomes for hearing impaired children, including:
- speech perception
- speech production
- receptive and expressive language
- psychosocial skills
- everyday functioning
- educational attainment.
All children are assessed at several intervals over a five year period.
A second phase of the study will continue to examine children's attainment at 8 and 11 years of age. The findings of the study will provide better understanding of the outcomes experienced by hearing imparied children and will input into optimal managment for future generations.
