Background
In the research and development of new hearing devices, it is essential that optimal evaluation can occur - this is ever more important as hearing devices become more sensitive.
Currently there are two methods of evaluation:
- questionnaire based approaches
- laboratory based approaches.
Both methods have shortcomings. The questionnaire-based method usually lacks control of environmental variables, while the laboratory-based method often fails to engage test subjects due to unrealistic acoustics.
Detail
This project aims to recreate real-world acoustic environments in a laboratory setting. Such a facility will enable researchers to conduct hearing device evaluation/research in a controlled fashion, using real-life sounds.
We plan to build a 3-dimentional sound field capture/playback facility capable of recreating the rich acoustic environment of everyday life - in a laboratory. To achieve this, a 40-strong loudspeaker array will be mounted on a dome inside an anechoic chamber.
