Development of improved totally implantable TIKI microphone system: COMPLETE

Program:
R3
Project area:
R3.3: Fully implantable hearing enhancements
Project-ID:
R3.3.1a
Project Status:
Completed

Background

Cochelar implants currently use an external microphone that sends information to an internally implanted electrode, located within the cochlear. If the external microphone becomes removed or damaged, the cochlear implant cannot function and the recipient can no longer hear.

Microphones are seldom used at night and cannot be used for example when showering or involved in some sports - thus potentially impacting on an individual's safety and quality of life.

Detail

This project aims to devise an alternative design approach to the microphone 'part' of the cochlear implant - a fully functional, implantable microphone that could be located under the skin as part of a totally implantable cochlear implant (TIKI) system.
