Biography

John Newall is currently a Lecturer in Audiology at Macquarie University where he convenes courses on diagnostic audiology, aural rehabilitation, advanced hearing aids and community audiology.  John has a background in diagnostic audiology having worked as a Senior Audiologist in the Audiology department at Sydney Children’s Hospital for many years, with a particular focus on paediatric audiology and universal neonatal hearing screening.

Current research includes a PhD (descibed below). Other research interests and involvement focus on; noise reduction technology and its efficacy in the severely to profoundly hearing impaired, and hearing loss and its prevention and management in developing countries.

HEARing CRC Project: R4.6.2

Title:  Outcomes of Children with Unilateral Hearing Loss (CUHL).

Detail: A sub-project of the Longitudinal Outcomes of Children with Hearing Impairment (LOCHI) study, this work is investigating the audiological characteristics and outcomes of children identified with unilateral hearing loss (UHL) through a universal neonatal hearing screening program. The aims of the project are to investigate the audiological characteristics of children with UHL at:

  • point of diagnosis; and
  • a five year follow up point.

The project also looks to investigate the speech and language outcomes of these children at five years of age to determine the effect of early onset UHL.
