Biography

HEARing CRC Supervisor: Shani Dettman

HEARing CRC Project: R4.2.2

Title:  Approaches to enhancing habilitation in children.

Detail: This prospective study will investigate language, speech and literacy outcomes for triads of children with hearing impairment who utilise cochlear implants and are enrolled in one of three types of early intervention programs:

  • Auditory-verbal
  • Oral/aural
  • Bilingual/aural with sign support

Subjects will be matched for age of implantation, age of intervention, maternal education, family socio-economic status and non-verbal intellectual ability. Measures of length of intervention, parental involvement and communicative reciprocity will also be taken.

It is hypothesised that early intervention (before 12 months) and long term early intervention (greater than 2 years) will improve language outcomes regardless of type of intervention.
